Biography

Wael Al-Dahdouh (born 1970) is a veteran Palestinian journalist and the bureau chief of Al Jazeera in Gaza, who became a global symbol of journalistic endurance and personal sacrifice during the Gaza war that began in October 2023. Born in the old Zaytoun neighborhood of Gaza City, he has spent more than two decades chronicling life and conflict in the besieged territory. His career began in 1998 with Al-Quds newspaper, followed by work as a correspondent for Voice of Palestine during the Second Intifada and for Al Arabiya, before he joined Al Jazeera in 2004. Over the following years he became one of the most familiar faces reporting from Gaza, covering successive wars and the daily realities of occupation and blockade with steady professionalism. The 2023-2024 war brought Al-Dahdouh unprecedented international attention amid almost unimaginable personal loss. In October 2023 an Israeli airstrike on Nuseirat killed his wife, son, daughter, and grandson; he learned of their deaths while on air and returned to reporting shortly afterward, an image that circulated worldwide. He was later wounded by an Israeli strike that killed his colleague Samer Abu Daqqa, and in January 2024 his eldest son, journalist Hamza al-Dahdouh, was killed in another strike.
