Ali Hasan Nayfeh was a Palestinian-American mathematician, mechanical engineer, and physicist widely regarded as the most influential figure in the modern field of applied nonlinear dynamics. Born on 21 December 1933 in the Shuwaykah neighborhood of Tulkarem in Mandatory Palestine, he grew up in modest circumstances and excelled academically before winning a scholarship to Stanford University, where he earned bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in aeronautics and astronautics, completing his PhD in 1964. Nayfeh's defining scholarly contribution was the systematic development and dissemination of perturbation methods, mathematical techniques for finding approximate solutions to the nonlinear equations that govern real physical systems. His 1973 textbook 'Perturbation Methods' and his later works on nonlinear oscillations became foundational references studied by engineers and applied mathematicians across the globe, translated into multiple languages.
