Biography

Munib Rashid al-Masri was born in 1934 in Nablus into a prominent local family. As a boy he was wounded by British soldiers during the Mandate period, an early mark of the political turbulence that would shape his life. He studied at An-Najah and went on to earn degrees in the United States, including from the University of Texas, training as a geologist and engineer. Al-Masri made his initial fortune in the oil and energy industry, building Edgo Group into a multinational energy and engineering conglomerate operating across the Middle East and beyond. This success established him as one of the most capable Arab industrialists of his generation and gave him the resources to invest heavily in his homeland. After the Oslo Accords, al-Masri returned to the West Bank and founded the Palestine Development and Investment Company (PADICO), a holding company that came to control dozens of firms spanning telecommunications, construction, tourism, energy, banking, finance, and agriculture. He also helped establish the Palestine Securities Exchange in Nablus. By many estimates his holdings account for a substantial share of the entire Palestinian economy, earning him the nickname the "Palestinian Rothschild" and the title "Duke of Nablus." Widely described as the world's richest Palestinian, al-Masri has long combined business with politics. A close friend of Yasser Arafat, he served as a minister in a Jordanian cabinet and reportedly declined offers of the Palestinian presidency and premiership, preferring the role of independent elder statesman and bridge-builder among rival factions. He is also a noted patron of Palestinian heritage and reconciliation. His hilltop estate near Nablus, Beit Falasteen, modeled on Palladio's Villa La Rotonda and housing antiquities and a mosaic of Palestinian identity, has become a cultural landmark. He has consistently advocated Palestinian national unity and a negotiated peace. Now in his nineties, Munib al-Masri stands as the towering figure of contemporary Palestinian business inside the homeland, a man who chose to reinvest his global fortune in building the institutions and economy of a future Palestinian state.

Why This Person Matters

The world's richest Palestinian, he reinvested a global energy fortune into PADICO and the institutions of the Palestinian economy, becoming the leading nation-builder of contemporary Palestinian business.

Historical Context

Munib al-Masri was born in 1934 into a prominent Nablus family and bore the Mandate's violence early, wounded as a boy by British soldiers. Unlike the exiled Galilee bourgeoisie, he remained tied to the West Bank highlands through Jordanian rule and the 1967 occupation, even as he built his energy fortune abroad. The Oslo Accords of the 1990s opened the decisive chapter of his life: he returned to the West Bank to invest in a nascent Palestinian Authority economy, betting that institution-building could lay groundwork for statehood. His career thus bridges the late Mandate, the Gulf-era diaspora fortune, and the fragile post-Oslo project of constructing a Palestinian economy inside the homeland.
